A US-based doctor who has immensely contributed to India's polio elimination and measles surveillance efforts has called for swift justice for the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a Kolkata state-run hospital.
Seattle-based Dr Ananda Sankar Bandyopadhyay, currently on a visit to India for a polio seminar, labeled the incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a 'colossal failure' of the West Bengal administration.
'We stand united in demanding justice for the rape and murder of the doctor,' Bandyopadhyay told PTI, urging rapid proceedings. He criticized the authorities' lack of accountability and emphasized the shock of such an event occurring to a government employee.
