A recent report has disclosed that road crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in India, constituting more than 43 percent of such fatalities. Overspeeding is identified as the chief culprit, ahead of other factors like drowning, falls, poisoning, and burns.
The report, titled 'National Strategy for prevention of unintentional injury,' was released by the Ministry of Health during the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, 2024. It highlighted a marginal increase in deaths from unintentional and intentional injuries between 2016 and 2022, with road traffic crashes (RTCs) being the predominant cause of unintentional deaths.
Despite efforts to improve road safety, the mortality ratio remains constant, with a significant gender disparity—86 percent of the fatalities being males. In addition, rural areas suffer disproportionately from RTC fatalities. To combat this, experts emphasize a shift toward a comprehensive safe systems approach, including safer roads, and vehicles, and protecting vulnerable road users.
