Dr. Mark Chavez, one of two doctors implicated in the death of actor Matthew Perry, will appear in a Los Angeles federal court on Friday to plead guilty to conspiring to distribute ketamine. The San Diego-based doctor reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and will assist them in their ongoing investigation.
Chavez admitted to acquiring ketamine through fraudulent means and selling it to Perry shortly before the actor's overdose. He has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors targeting Dr. Salvador Plasencia and alleged drug dealer Jasveen Sangha. Both have pleaded not guilty and are set to face trial next year.
U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada condemned the doctors for exploiting Perry's addiction in his final months. Perry, who battled addiction during his career as a 'Friends' star, died from a fatal dose of ketamine on Oct. 28, according to the medical examiner. The case highlights the dangerous off-label use of ketamine for treating depression.
