The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has made a fervent appeal to Union Health Minister J P Nadda, calling for the enactment of a central law to address the escalating assaults on medics and healthcare establishments. In a letter, the IMA emphasized the urgency of this legislation to ensure the safety and security of healthcare workers.
The association referenced a 2019 draft bill and amendments from the Epidemic Diseases Act, urging that these be promulgated as an ordinance to boost the confidence of medical professionals in India. The IMA also expressed gratitude to Nadda for considering their suggestions and acknowledged the interventions by the Supreme Court in related cases.
Protests by resident doctors continue as they mark the 10th day of an indefinite strike following the incident in Kolkata, underscoring the urgent need for legislative action to protect healthcare workers nationwide.
