The death toll from the fire incident at a pharmaceutical unit in Anakapalli rose to 13, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Anakapalli District Collector Vijaya Krishnan reported that the fire ignited at 2:15 pm at Escientia Advanced Sciences Pvt Ltd, located in Atchutapuram. The explosion is suspected to have been caused by an electrical issue.

The factory, which operates with 381 employees in two shifts, had fewer staff present due to the lunchtime break. Consequently, 33 injured individuals were transported to various hospitals, while 13 trapped employees were successfully rescued. Rescue operations continue with six deployed fire tenders.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his sorrow over the lost lives and assured government support for the families affected, according to an official release. Escientia Advanced Sciences has been producing intermediate chemicals and APIs since April 2019, with a significant investment in the region.
