The Kolkata Police have initiated a probe against Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for alleged financial irregularities at the state-run health facility, a senior officer disclosed on Tuesday.

The investigation follows the formation of a four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the alleged financial misdeeds and the recent death of a postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was discovered earlier this month. Ghosh could be summoned soon for questioning, the officer added.

Ghosh, appointed as principal in 2021, also faces charges of revealing the identity of the deceased trainee doctor, allegedly raped and murdered while on duty on August 9. The cases are currently lodged at Tala Police Station, with the SIT led by IG Dr Pranav Kumar of Swami Vivekananda State Police Academy. Concurrently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe into the trainee doctor's death, with Ghosh having been questioned by the agency over the past four days.
