The Union Home Ministry has called for bi-hourly situation reports from state police forces in response to nationwide protests triggered by the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The ministry emphasized the need for vigilant monitoring of law and order across states, noting the widespread discontent among medical professionals. ''Henceforth, a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard may kindly be sent to the MHA control room (New Delhi) by Fax/Email/WhatsApp from 1600 hours today,'' said the ministry's communication sent on Friday.

After the August 9 incident, where a postgraduate trainee was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the next day. The Calcutta High Court has since handed over the case to the CBI. Protests by doctors and medical staff have affected healthcare services nationwide, with demands for better security measures, including a central law to combat violence against healthcare workers and declaring hospitals as safe zones.
