Doctors, post-graduate medicos, and medical teachers in Kerala are gearing up for a statewide protest in government medical colleges on Monday. This demonstration comes in response to the recent sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a state-run hospital in Kolkata.
The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) issued a strong condemnation of the tragic murder on Sunday. The association announced that doctors in the southern state would protest against the gruesome incident.
'The safety of women doctors, particularly those on night duty and emergency department duty, has always been a matter of concern,' the KGMCTA stated. They emphasized that respective governments must ensure a safe working environment, enabling healthcare professionals to perform their duties without fear. In alignment with nationwide protests organized by doctors' organizations, the KGMCTA will also join the movement to advocate for workplace safety. Medical teachers, postgraduate doctors, house surgeons, and medical students will concurrently hold protests on Monday, according to Dr. Rosenara Beegum, state president of the association.
