The Kerala government has sounded the alarm over a viral hepatitis outbreak in Malappuram district, reporting 11 fatalities this year.
According to the Health Department, Malappuram has seen 1,420 confirmed cases and 5,360 suspected cases of viral hepatitis in 2023.
Last month, the district recorded 154 confirmed and 1,607 suspected cases. The most affected areas include Athanikkal, Kuzhimanna, Munniyur, Chelembra, Kondotti, Tirurangadi, Parappanangadi, and Nannambra.
District Medical Officer Dr. R Renuka stated that preventative measures have been intensified, involving local government bodies and health departments.
Efforts include chlorinating wells every three days and conducting health awareness campaigns with the help of volunteers and health workers.
