In an alarming turn of events, the district health department in Gautam Buddh Nagar has reported receiving 75 bodies for post-mortem in a span of just three days, from June 18 to June 20, amidst an intense heatwave.

Senior health officials stated that the usual number of bodies received daily averages around seven or eight, describing the surge in fatalities as 'unexpected.' Despite the increase, the department has not conclusively linked the deaths directly to the heatwave.

'The rise in post-mortem cases is unprecedented. Normally, we handle about 7-8 cases daily. However, on June 18, we received 28 bodies, followed by 25 on June 19, and 22 by the evening of June 20,' said Dr. Suneel Kumar Sharma, Chief Medical Officer of Gautam Buddh Nagar.

He added that hospitals categorized 20 bodies as 'brought dead,' with 10 remaining 'unidentified.' In response to this surge, additional staff have been deployed to manage the increased workload.

Dr. Sharma emphasized the severity of the current weather conditions, warning that the ongoing heatwave is not typical. 'This heat is exceptionally harsh and poses a significant risk to life, particularly for certain vulnerable groups such as construction workers, security personnel, and traffic police.'
