On Monday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reaffirmed India's commitment to a secular Constitution, highlighting the rejection of religious-based reservations. This statement followed remarks by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar about altering the Constitution, which sparked significant political debate.
The controversy gained momentum after Shivakumar suggested that reservations for Muslims would be facilitated by altering the current constitutional provisions. Rijiju criticized this stance, referencing the 1947 Constituent Assembly's dismissal of similar proposals by the Muslim League. The NDA parties expressed grave concern over these comments.
Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned amid the heated discussions. Rijiju demanded clarity from the Congress, targeting Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge for his party's stance. Responding, Kharge asserted the Constitution's sanctity, crediting the Bharat Jodo Yatra as a testament to protecting India's foundational values, while Shivakumar insisted he was misquoted.
