The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) executed a successful medical evacuation, airlifting a critically ill patient from Agatti in Lakshadweep to Ernakulam city in Kerala. The Ministry of Defence reported on November 13 that a 68-year-old patient suffering from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and respiratory failure was promptly evacuated for urgent medical treatment.
This operation was a result of seamless collaboration among the ICG district coast guard in Kochi, Lakshadweep Headquarters, and the island's administration. A Dornier aircraft was dispatched, transporting the patient to General Hospital Ernakulam. This operation underscores the ICG's ongoing commitment to aiding the Lakshadweep administration and ensuring the safety and connectivity of island residents, aligned with their motto, 'Vayam Rakshamah' - We Protect.
In a separate incident on November 12, the ICG promptly responded to a distress call from a fishing boat approximately 60 km at sea south-east of Diu. The ICGS Pipavav directed ICGS C-419 to perform an immediate medical evacuation of a sick fisherman. After initial first-aid onboard, the patient was taken to a local hospital in Rajula for further medical care, where he was met by family members.
