As the national capital grapples with escalating pollution levels and subsequent health crises, medical experts have voiced strong criticism against the Delhi administration's handling of the situation.

Dr. Arvind Kumar, Chairman of the Institute of Chest Surgery at Medanta Hospital, expressed his discontent with the government's reliance on short-term tactics, stressing that the root causes remain unaddressed after two decades of discussions.

The deteriorating air quality has led to a surge in respiratory problems, including pneumonia. "Temporary measures like school closures are merely knee-jerk reactions," Dr. Kumar lamented, arguing for sustainable solutions instead of quick fixes.

Highlighting the ineffectiveness of fogging machines and temporary bans, he criticized authorities for not tackling pollution sources such as crop burning and traffic congestion.

Dr. Kumar's concerns are echoed by Dr. Nikhil Modi from Apollo Hospital, who noted the adverse health effects on both individuals with pre-existing conditions and previously healthy individuals.

With Delhi's air quality index reported at 349, falling into the 'very poor' category, experts warn of the city's unfit living conditions. Both physicians stress the increasing burden on healthcare due to pollution, calling for robust, long-term strategies to address the crisis.
