Drone Strikes Escalate Tensions in Russia's Oil Heartland

A drone hit an oil depot in Russia's Stavropol region, marking the second suspected Ukrainian attack in two days on Russian fuel sites. Despite ongoing tensions and stalled talks, the incident highlights continued retaliatory actions between Ukraine and Russia targeting each other's energy infrastructure.

A drone strike targeted an oil depot in Russia's southern Stavropol region, according to statements by local governor Vladimir Vladimirov on Friday. The attack marks the second day of suspected Ukrainian incursions on Russian fuel facilities.

These attacks follow a seven-week hiatus, with the last incident reported on September 10, when a fuel facility in Tula was targeted. Thankfully, there were no casualties in the recent incident at the Svetlograd oil depot, Vladimirov conveyed via Telegram.

The Baza Telegram channel, closely connected to Russia's security apparatus, shared CCTV footage purportedly capturing the depot attack, showing one fuel tank rapidly consumed by fire. The strikes escalate just days after the Financial Times highlighted preliminary discussions between Ukraine and Russia on potentially ceasing energy site attacks—a claim Russia has rejected.
