In a notable initiative, female inmates at Aligarh Jail are diligently crafting vibrant designer diyas in preparation for the Diwali festival. These uniquely handcrafted lamps are poised to be sold at stalls positioned outside the prison, providing a much-needed source of income for the inmates. Prison Superintendent Brijendra Singh Yadav announced that the Self-Reliant India and Skill Development schemes have facilitated the production of over 20,000 diyas.
The revenue generated through the sale of these diyas will be directed to the inmates themselves, thereby fostering financial independence. According to Superintendent Yadav, both male and female inmates contribute to this project, with women focusing on designer diyas while men produce electric versions. The sale prices are set at Rs 2 for small diyas and Rs 10 for larger ones, open to the general public.
This initiative is a concerted effort to empower women through the self-reliant India scheme, aiming to make them financially self-sufficient. In an additional nod to their progress, photographs and videos of the inmates at work will be shared on the Namami Gange app, showcasing their exceptional skill and dedication.
