In a significant move aligned with the Dhanteras festival, leading Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) such as Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum have announced an increase in the commission given to petrol pump dealers. The decision comes alongside efforts to rationalize intrastate freight, aiming to standardize fuel prices across various regions within states, except in regions affected by the Model Code of Conduct.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri praised the measures as 'historic', emphasizing the consumer benefits, especially for those in remote locations, which could see reductions in petrol and diesel prices across many areas in India. Puri underscored the long-pending fulfillment of demands from petrol pump dealers, noting happiness among dealers and staff at more than 83,000 fuel stations nationwide due to this announcement.

Effective from October 30, 2024, Indian Oil's revision in dealer margins follows the resolution of previous litigation. This change, which will not impact the retail prices of fuel, aligns with the company's goal of enhancing customer service and retail workforce welfare. The initiatives are seen as reflective of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to equitably distribute amenities, including fuel pricing benefits, to remote regions of the country.
