Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, on Thursday, unveiled a groundbreaking vision for the state's infrastructure. Central to this plan is the ambitious Shimla Ropeway project, poised to become India's longest and the world's second-largest, and pivotal enhancements to the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). Speaking at a press conference in Shimla, Agnihotri emphasized, "Shimla Ropeway would be the biggest project in India and the second biggest in the world after Bolivia."

The ropeway project is designed to tackle Shimla's chronic congestion issues, improve urban transportation, and provide substantial employment opportunities — directly for 250 people and indirectly for more than 20,000. Agnihotri underscored the project's potential to relieve severe traffic congestion for tourists, particularly during peak seasons. Boasting a budget of Rs 1,734 crores, the project's Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared by a foreign consultant, marks significant progress, funded by the state government.

The Deputy CM detailed plans for 660 trolleys and 13 stations in the project, which will transport approximately 6,000 passengers per hour. He called on residents for their support, highlighting its potential to boost regional tourism and enhance environmental sustainability. Turning to enhancing railway connectivity, Agnihotri pledged commitment to the Bhanupali-Bilaspur-Beri and Chandigarh-Baddi railway lines, despite rising costs requiring state budget adjustments. Agnihotri also announced HRTC's fleet modernization with the acquisition of 327 electric buses, aiming to address financial challenges from subsidized travel while enhancing service management through new tracking facilities. These strategic transport initiatives underscore the state's dedication to economic growth and its standing on national and international stages.
