Junior doctors in Kolkata are staging a 12-hour hunger strike, escalating their demands for improved security in hospitals. This demonstration follows the distressing death of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Dr. Abid Hasan, a junior participant, highlighted the ongoing communication breakdown with authorities, underscoring the need for urgent dialogue.
Dr. Hasan criticized the government's failure to deliver on past promises, including the installation of CCTV cameras and adequate hospital resources. He emphasized the risks faced by students and the necessity for transparency in bed availability across the region's hospitals, advocating for communal support in the face of police criticism.
Amidst the hunger strike, Dr. Soumodip Roy detailed plans for a symbolic rally, advocating for significant changes such as the removal of the health secretary. The junior doctors and medical students have issued an ultimatum, demanding governmental accountability and hinting at an indefinite hunger strike should their conditions remain unmet.
