The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), a global union for transport workers based in the UK, has condemned the demolition of an informal settlement in Gujarat that has left thousands of port workers and fishers homeless. ITF has called for government action, urging Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state government, and the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) to provide assistance to the displaced individuals.
The demolition occurred on September 5, affecting around 2,500 workers. Despite many residents having lived there for generations, more than 600 huts were destroyed in the Banna Mazdoor Basti settlement near Kandla Port. ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton criticized the demolition, deemed as "spurious claims of security concerns," stressing that it is essential for the Indian government and DPA to protect the workers' dignity and human rights.
Shri Kutch General Mazdoor Sangh (SKGMS), an ITF affiliate, is closely monitoring the situation to support the affected workers. ITF is demanding compensation and proper resettlement for the displaced, a halt to further demolitions, and consultations with local unions for a humanitarian and sustainable solution. ITF President Paddy Crumlin condemned the authorities' actions as an "outrageous attack" on the rights of dock workers and fishers.
