A devastating gas explosion in a coal mine in Iran's South Khorasan Province has claimed the lives of at least 31 individuals, left 16 injured, and resulted in 17 miners still unaccounted for, according to Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.

State media initially reported higher casualties, but updates from authorities clarified the numbers. The explosion, attributed to methane gas, occurred in blocks B and C of a mine managed by the Madanjoo company. Local officials reported that rescue operations faced challenges as teams were still 400 meters away from the miners' likely location.

Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressed condolences to the victims' families. The mine was reportedly compliant with safety regulations following inspections last month. Nevertheless, an investigation has been initiated by the public prosecutor to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the incident.
