Pope Francis Condemns Murder of Honduran Environmental Activist Juan López

Pope Francis on Sunday condemned the slaying of environmental activist Juan López in Honduras, adding to a global outcry over the killing.

López was gunned down this month in Tocoa after years of fighting mining companies to protect the region's natural resources. The Pope voiced support for those defending fundamental rights and the environment, emphasizing the need for justice.

Colón, a rural Caribbean region, has witnessed numerous targeted attacks on environmental activists. Last year, three members of López's organization were also killed. Global leaders have demanded an exhaustive investigation, including the US Assistant Secretary of State and the United Nations. Honduran President Xiomara Castro labeled López's murder as 'vile' and assured a thorough probe.

Latin America remains perilous for environmental defenders, with Global Witness ranking Honduras among the deadliest countries. The killing of Berta Cáceres in 2016 still casts a shadow over Honduras, emphasizing the persistent risks faced by those opposing powerful criminal and corporate interests.
