In a closely watched race, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) have successfully fended off the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Brandenburg's state election.

According to an exit poll released by broadcaster ZDF, the SPD secured 32% of the vote, narrowly outpacing AfD's 29%.
