Rahul Gandhi Mourns the Death of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha and a senior Congress leader, mourned the death of Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, on Thursday. In a heartfelt post on social media platform X, Gandhi shared a photo with Yechury and described him as a protector of the idea of India with a deep understanding of the country.

Gandhi lamented the loss of Yechury, mentioning their lengthy discussions and extended his condolences to Yechury's family, friends, and followers. 'My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers in this hour of grief,' he wrote.

Sitaram Yechury passed away due to pneumonia at the age of 72. He had been admitted to the AIIMS in Delhi on August 19, 2024, initially in the emergency ward before being moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). AIIMS confirmed his passing at 3:05 PM.

The family has donated his body to AIIMS, New Delhi, for teaching and research purposes. CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah acknowledged Yechury's contributions, stating, 'Sitaram Yechury was the strongest voice in favour of democracy, secularism, unity and the united progress of this country.'

Yechury served in the CPM politburo for 32 years and as the party's general secretary since 2015. He also represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017. The CPI(M) displayed their mourning by flying the party flag at half-mast at its Delhi office.
