The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report detailing an attempted rape and murder that escalated into communal tension and violence in Jainoor, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, Telangana. The incident occurred on September 4, prompting protests by tribal organisations.

According to an NHRC statement on Tuesday, shops and commercial establishments were burnt, and stones were pelted at a religious site. Authorities imposed a curfew, banned internet services in the affected area, and deployed additional forces. The accused perpetrator was reportedly arrested, and local elders helped pacify the situation.

The Commission noted that if the event details are accurate, they indicate a serious human rights violation. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in Telangana, requesting a detailed report on the matter, including the FIR status, care provided to the victim, and any compensation granted. The response is expected within two weeks.

The media report from September 5, 2024, stated that the assailant, an autorickshaw driver, attempted to murder the woman after she resisted his rape attempt. She was found unconscious on the road and was subsequently treated at a hospital. Upon regaining consciousness, she reported the incident to the police.
