The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped in, following a media report about an attempted rape and murder that ignited communal tension and violence in Jainoor, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, Telangana, on September 4. According to the NHRC's statement on Tuesday, tribal organizations' protests exacerbated the situation, leading to the burning of shops and businesses, and stone-pelting on a religious site. Authorities imposed a curfew, disabled internet services, and deployed additional forces to contain the situation. The accused has been arrested, and community elders have intervened to calm the unrest.

The NHRC observed that if true, the news report indicates a grave violation of human rights. The commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Telangana, requiring a detailed report on the matter. This report should include the status of the FIR, as well as information on the victim's health, counseling, and compensation from state authorities. The response is due within two weeks.

As per the media report dated September 5, 2024, the incident involved an autorickshaw driver who, after failing to sexually assault a woman, attempted to murder her by striking her with a stick, rendering her unconscious. The victim was subsequently hospitalized and, upon regaining consciousness, recounted the ordeal to the police.
