Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the Assam state government is amplifying efforts to remove illegal immigrants. In his statement on X, Sarma emphasized the State Government's multifaceted approach—enhanced surveillance, better coordination with central agencies, and deploying additional forces.
Sarma's statement highlighted the Assam Police Border Organization's critical role in detecting illegal immigrants through international borders. Data from January reveals 54 detections, with 45 repatriations and nine arrests in Karimganj. The intensified efforts address a recent increase in illegal crossings, focusing particularly on Upper and North Assam, due to potential national security threats.
The detailed action plan includes: increasing border outpost surveillance, enhancing intelligence gathering, proactive community engagement, ensuring timely legal actions, and employing additional forces in sensitive border districts. Additional measures involve strengthening documentation, biometric collection, and continuous enforcement of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Moreover, directives have been issued for monthly progress reports by all police units involved.
