The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) marked a major milestone by unveiling the Meerut Metro's state-of-the-art features at the RRTS Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad, on Saturday. Positioned as a pioneering urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), the metro aims to transform transportation in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, offering residents a safe, fast, and contemporary mobility option.

Discussing the development with ANI, Shalabh Goel, Managing Director of NCRTC, emphasized that the Meerut Metro will significantly enhance the city's transportation system, boosting connectivity, productivity, and overall quality of life. By providing a reliable and rapid transit solution, the metro is set to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and promote economic growth. Goel highlighted the focus on understanding commuter needs to tailor the metro's features for optimal comfort and efficiency. An innovative approach integrates the Meerut Metro with the existing RRTS infrastructure, enabling seamless public transit from Meerut South to Modipuram, with important station interchanges for switching between metro and Namo Bharat train services, thus saving construction costs.

The Meerut Metro corridor spans 23 km with 13 stations, combining elevated and underground sections. With a design speed of 135 km/h and an operational speed of 120 km/h, the energy-efficient trainsets boast a modern lightweight design and advanced braking systems. Each three-car trainset offers comfortable seating arrangements and numerous amenities for passenger convenience and safety.

Prioritizing passenger safety, platform screen doors (PSDs) will be installed at all stations, complemented by emergency communication systems and reserved seating for women and senior citizens. Universal accessibility, with provisions for medical emergencies, is a critical feature. Manufactured in India under the Make in India initiative, the trainsets by M/s Alstom reflect world-class standards.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the initial operational section of the RRTS on October 20, 2023. The first Namo Bharat train flagged off, with the priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot now available for public use. The entire RRTS and Meerut Metro network is expected to be fully operational by 2025, promising a robust future for regional transit.
