The prices of banana leaves have surged in the local market owing to heightened demand from Ganesh Chaturthi and Subha Muhurtham, the auspicious day for weddings and ceremonies. Thoothukudi's banana farming is vital, with large quantities of the leaves transported to various parts of Tamil Nadu for sale.

In preparation for Ganesha Chaturthi and Subha Muhurtham this Saturday, banana leaves have been auctioned in bulk. Farmers from regions like Kurumpur, Eral, Sairapuram, Korampallam, and Vazhavallan in the Tuticorin district harvested and brought their banana leaves to the market.

Last week, a bundle of banana leaves sold for around Rs 1,000 now fetches between Rs 3,500 and Rs 6,300. The spike in prices has traders smiling, with expectations that rates will hold steady until September 15.

Similarly, banana prices have seen a modest uptick. A bunch used for pooja and sweet delicacies now sells for up to Rs 600, while the Mars variety reaches Rs 800 in the market.

Ganesh Chaturthi, a ten-day festival beginning on the fourth day of the Hindu lunisolar month 'Bhadrapada', kicks off on September 7 this year. Known as 'Vinayak Chaturthi' or 'Vinayak Chavithi', the festival honors Ganesha as the 'God of New Beginnings' and 'Remover of Obstacles'.

The first look of Mumbai's renowned Lalbaugcha Raja was revealed on Thursday. The festival is widely celebrated, drawing lakhs of devotees to mandals seeking Lord Ganesh's blessings.

During the celebrations, people bring Ganesh idols into their homes, fast, prepare delectable dishes, and visit pandals. (ANI)
