NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) has announced its intention to begin mining operations at the Machhakata coal block in Odisha ahead of the planned timeline. The Machhakata coal block, located in Angul district, is the second and largest commercial coal project undertaken by the company.

With an estimated reserve of 1.4 billion tonnes of coal and a production capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the block is expected to be one of the largest in India. The coal block falls under Grade G10-G11 and was successfully bid for by NLCIL during the commercial coal block e-auction held in July.

NLCIL's accelerated timeline is part of its broader Corporate Plan 2030, which aims to increase its annual coal production capacity to over 100 million tonnes by 2030 from the current 50 million tonnes. Moreover, the coal ministry recently signed agreements for the Machhakata block and other mines with successful bidders, further highlighting the strategic importance of these projects.
