In a significant turn of events, Meeran Haider, an accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, withdrew his bail appeal from the Delhi High Court on Friday. The division bench, consisting of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpaliya, permitted the withdrawal, dismissing the appeal as withdrawn.

Initially scheduled for hearing on October 7 along with other appeals, Haider's counsel, Advocate Shri Singh, informed the court that they seek to approach the trial court as the police investigation has concluded. Haider's bail plea had been dismissed by the trial court in 2022, and his appeal had been pending in the High Court since May 20, 2022, when the Delhi High Court issued a notice to Delhi Police.

Karkardooma Court had earlier rejected Haider's bail plea, with the trial court dismissing the defense's argument that Haider was not present in Delhi during the riots. The court emphasized that in conspiracy cases, physical presence at the crime scene is not essential. Noteworthy is the statement given by several protected witnesses, highlighting Haider's alleged involvement in the conspiracy. The prosecution emphasized Haider's role in managing protest sites and his membership in various coordination groups.
