In a significant development, the Punjab Cabinet has decided to increase the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, resulting in price hikes of 61 paise and 92 paise per litre, respectively. The decision was made during a council of ministers meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Fuel pump owners have expressed strong opposition, stating that the increase will significantly impact their businesses. This marks the third fuel price hike under the Aam Aadmi Party-led government in the past two-and-a-half years.
Political opposition has also been vocal, with figures like Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa criticizing the decision. They argue that the hike will exacerbate inflation and place additional financial strain on farmers who rely heavily on diesel for agriculture.
