The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has passed a landmark bill to revoke the pensions and allowances of MLAs disqualified under the anti-defection law. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized that the bill aims to fortify democracy in the state.
In a voice vote on Wednesday, the Assembly approved the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Allowances and Pensions) Amendment Bill 2024, despite fierce opposition. Critics labeled the amendment politically motivated and called for its immediate withdrawal.
CM Sukhu defended the bill, stating, "Disqualified MLAs will no longer receive pensions and allowances, serving as a stern warning to those thinking of switching allegiances for political gain." The amendment notably affects six Congress MLAs disqualified for violating the party whip on February 28.
