Citizens from diverse communities in Kolkata flooded the streets on Sunday in a display of anguish over the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College's seminar hall on August 9. A protest march began at College Square and moved towards the Dharmatala area, with participants holding a banner reading, 'I want justice for my sisters.'

In addition, TMC leaders and workers organized their protest, demanding the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reveal the current status of their investigation and advocating for capital punishment for the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.

Speaking at the National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the need for stringent laws for women's safety. 'Strict laws have been made, but the pace of judicial decisions needs acceleration to ensure a sense of security,' he stated.

Protests from the medical community have extended to different states, with doctors calling for justice for their colleague and demanding enhanced security measures for healthcare professionals following this brutal incident.

The sexual assault case has ignited widespread outrage and prompted the Calcutta High Court to transfer the investigation from Kolkata police to the CBI. Arrests have been made, including Sanjay Roy, a hospital civic volunteer. The incident has fueled political tensions, with the BJP demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
