The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has upgraded the security detail of RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat to the Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) protocol, enhancing his protection beyond the existing 'Z+' level provided by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.

This enhancement elevates Bhagwat's security to the same level as that of Home Minister Amit Shah, following new directives issued on August 16 amid fresh threat assessments by the Intelligence Bureau. Previously, ASL protocol was mandated only during Bhagwat's visits to sensitive locations.

One of the 10 individuals accorded 'Z+' security cover by CISF personnel, Bhagwat's upgraded security reflects recent evaluations of his vulnerabilities, particularly in non-BJP governed states. The report points to threats from radical Islamist groups and increased risks highlighted by intelligence inputs, prompting MHA to classify Bhagwat as an ASL protectee, necessitating an upgrade in security measures.

All states and Union Territories have been notified of this security upgrade. According to the ASL protocol, local agencies, including district administrations, police, and health departments, are to collaborate to ensure the protectee's safety. Helicopter travel is now restricted to specially designed aircraft, following detailed protocols. The ASL also mandates comprehensive anti-sabotage inspections and the implementation of multi-layered security rings.

The intensification of security comes in response to identified threats, with coordination required from various state and local agencies to mitigate risks and secure Bhagwat's safety.
