Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where he dedicated a 20-bed cardiology ICU to patient care. This visit marked the final day of his three-day tour of Barak Valley. During his visit, he not only inaugurated the Cardiology ICU but also reviewed the progress of a 535-bed emergency building under construction.

The new emergency building, expected to open by November next year, will increase the hospital's total capacity to approximately 1,885 beds from the current 1,350, including ICU beds. Chief Minister Sarma assessed the planned facilities in the new building, which will house five relocated departments aimed at improving patient care for critical and emergency cases.

Additionally, he announced plans for a 1,000-bed facility to be constructed on the hospital premises. The Chief Minister also evaluated ancillary services and staff vacancies, considering the hospital's needs for the next decade. He directed PWD (Building) officials to prepare a master plan for the hospital's future expansion.

Present at the meeting were Guardian Minister in charge of Cachar Jayanta Mallabaruah, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, MLAs Kaushik Rai and Dipayan Chakraborty, Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, and other senior government officials.
