On Saturday, the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of three major science and technology schemes under a unified central sector scheme named 'Vigyan Dhara'. The initiative will see an investment of Rs 10,579.84 crore from 2021-22 to 2025-26, aligning with the 15th Finance Commission period.

The programs within 'Vigyan Dhara' will work towards the five-year targets set by the Department of Science and Technology, contributing to the long-term vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047'. The Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasized improving science and technology infrastructure and capacity in the country.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed the media about the scheme's three major components: Science and Technology (S&T) Institutional and Human Capacity Building; Research and Development and Innovation; and Technology Development and Deployment. The consolidation aims to optimize fund use and ensure better coordination among various programs, an official release noted.

The 'Vigyan Dhara' scheme's primary objective is to enhance India's science and technology capacity by fostering research, innovation, and technological advancements. The initiative will boost the science ecosystem through support for research laboratories in academic institutions and initiatives targeting gender parity in S&T fields.

Focused on areas such as sustainable energy, water research, and international collaborative projects, 'Vigyan Dhara' aims to create a critical human resource pool to elevate the country's full-time equivalent (FTE) researcher count. The scheme also aims to increase collaboration between academia, government, and industry.

Moreover, the program aligns its research and development efforts with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and strives to meet global standards while adhering to national priorities. The Department of Science & Technology (DST) will lead the initiative, integrating and promoting scientific activities across the country.

The merger of the three central sector schemes under 'Vigyan Dhara' is expected to enhance efficiency and promote innovations from educational institutions to startups, playing a crucial role in India's technological development.
