Russia Accuses Ukraine of 'Nuclear Terrorism' at Kursk Power Station
Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to attack the Kursk nuclear power station, calling it an act of 'nuclear terrorism'. This comes just days before the International Atomic Energy Agency's head is scheduled to visit. The accusation follows a significant Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory earlier this month.
Russia has leveled serious accusations against Ukraine, claiming that an overnight attempt was made to attack the Kursk nuclear power station, denouncing it as an act of 'nuclear terrorism'. This incident unfolds mere days before Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is set to inspect the site.
The Kursk region has been a battleground since Ukraine launched a surprise offensive on Aug. 6, marking the most substantial foreign incursion into Russian territory since World War II. Russian officials reported the interception of a drone near a spent nuclear fuel storage facility, but the details remain unconfirmed by independent sources.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed the need for an immediate IAEA response, while President Vladimir Putin reiterated accusations against Ukraine. The ongoing fighting around the nuclear plant is significant as Ukraine attempts to solidify its control. Meanwhile, Rosenergoatom announced the planned maintenance of unit number 4 at the plant.
