Arts Minister Paul Goldsmith has announced the appointment of Edward Ellison ONZM as the new chair of the Māori Heritage Council and deputy chair of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board.
Goldsmith praised Ellison as a highly respected leader with extensive governance and cultural expertise. Ellison’s distinguished career includes numerous board positions focused on protecting and promoting Māori heritage, a commitment that earned him a New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015.
Goldsmith expressed confidence in Ellison’s suitability for these roles, which involve overseeing historic places and areas of spiritual, cultural, and historical significance to Māori.
The minister also acknowledged the contributions of Sir John Clarke, who has served in these roles since 2014. Clarke's influential work in Māori and heritage preservation earned him a knighthood in 2018.
