In response to public outrage, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the suspension of three police officials over the delayed response to a sexual assault case involving two minors at a school in Badlapur. The senior police inspector, assistant sub-inspector, and head constable of the Badlapur police station were suspended.
This decision followed revelations that these officials delayed taking action initially, igniting widespread public outcry and calls for accountability. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the state government, accusing it of neglecting women's safety and urging the approval of the Maharashtra Shakti Criminal Law to prevent further incidents.
Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar confirmed the arrest of one accused and promised maximum punishment. He stated that the state's education department has been fully mobilized, with instructions given to IAS officers to investigate why the school's CCTV was not operational. Kesarkar also announced the formation of Vishakha Committees in every school to ensure student safety and transparency.
Protests flared at Badlapur Railway Station, where demonstrators clashed with police. Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan addressed protesters, assuring them of a swift and thorough investigation. Local train services were halted as a result of the protest activity.
