The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently hosted a symposium at the India Habitat Centre to tackle the pressing issue of women's safety at work and in public spaces. The event, which concluded on Monday, saw a slew of recommendations aimed at improving safety for women nationwide.

NHRC's acting chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani emphasised the importance of a holistic approach in overcoming barriers that women face in their everyday lives. She stressed the necessity of collective societal efforts and the strengthening of existing laws to hold perpetrators accountable.

The symposium suggested several measures, including performing safety and social audits, gender sensitisation programs at all levels, media guidelines for reporting crimes against women, and proactive Internal Complaints Committees at workplaces. Discussions also highlighted the need for initiatives like the Nirbhaya Fund and Safe City Project to ensure tangible policy outcomes.
