On Saturday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated a state-wide Intensified Information Education and Communication (IEC) campaign at the Secretariat to enhance public awareness about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). During the event, CM Saha conducted a review meeting on HIV and AIDS-related issues.

Chief Minister Saha stressed the need to identify the sources of HIV infection and implement extensive public awareness and preventive measures. He highlighted that widespread public education is crucial for controlling AIDS infections.

Saha emphasized that students from schools to colleges should be educated about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Teachers and associated personnel should take active roles in preventing HIV infection. The state has granted permission to start drug rehabilitation centers in eight districts, as mentioned in the state budget. Additionally, a new rehabilitation center with modern facilities will be constructed in Bishramganj under Sepahijala District.

Increased screening and regular observation of HIV/AIDS patients are vital, said Saha, noting that Sikkim has the lowest number of AIDS patients among Northeastern states. He called for Tripura's rate to be further reduced.

Chief Secretary JK Sinha highlighted the importance of responsible awareness to prevent unnecessary confusion. Over 100 awareness programs for students in various colleges and schools have been conducted from January to July this year.

A pictorial report showed that 31 colleges and higher education institutions in eight districts have joined the Red Ribbon Club. IEC materials have been distributed free of cost to various schools and colleges. Thirteen voluntary organizations are actively working to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the state. The review meeting was attended by various high-ranking officials, including Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Finance Secretary Apoorba Roy, and others.
