The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), operating under the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER), has proudly secured the prestigious Oeko-Tex certification for its Eri Silk from Germany on the occasion of India's 78th Independence Day. This significant accomplishment not only elevates the traditional craftsmanship of the region but also positions Eri Silk as a globally recognized, sustainable textile.

Eri Silk is acclaimed as the world's only vegan silk. Unlike other varieties of silk, the process for Eri Silk does not involve killing the moth inside the cocoon. Instead, the moth naturally exits, leaving the cocoon behind for use. This ethical and eco-friendly method makes Eri Silk a symbol of compassion and sustainability in the textile industry, the Ministry of Development of North-East Region stated. The Oeko-Tex certification, a rigorous standard ensuring textiles are tested for harmful substances and produced under environmentally friendly conditions, acts as a significant endorsement for Eri Silk.

This milestone further solidifies Eri Silk's status as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Assam, emphasizing its authenticity and regional significance. The certification marks a crucial step in enabling Eri Silk to penetrate the global export market, broadening its reach, and establishing a formidable international presence.

The recognition underscores NEHHDC's dedication to promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Assam while adopting sustainable practices. This achievement opens new avenues for Eri Silk, positioning it as a leading eco-friendly fabric in the international market, and showcasing the region's potential in making a substantial contribution to the global textile industry.
