Former Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Prof (Dr) Sandip Ghosh, sought protection from the Calcutta High Court on Friday, claiming life threats. The court has instructed the State government to provide him with police protection.

The court also advised Ghosh's counsel to file a separate affidavit for any additional claims or details. Ghosh resigned as principal on Monday, alleging defamation on social media platforms following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital premises.

During Tuesday's hearing, the Chief Justice division bench of the Calcutta HC considered several PILs related to the matter. The Chief Justice questioned Ghosh's appointment after his resignation, which had sparked protests when he was appointed principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

Amid rising tensions, the newly appointed Principal of the Medical College, Suhrita Pal, faced pressure from protesting doctors to address the midnight mob attack and meet the demands of the medical students and doctors. Addressing the students, she urged them to trust her, saying, "If you can't trust me for one hour then send me home also. You need to believe me, I won't go. If you can't believe me then don't expect anything from me."

This turmoil follows the death of a post-graduate trainee doctor on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The victim's family has alleged rape and murder, sparking nationwide protests by doctors and medical fraternities.
