The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, tabled in Lok Sabha by the Union government, faced vigorous opposition from Congress and several other parties, denouncing it as 'draconian' and an 'attack on the Constitution.' The opposition, including DMK, NCP, Trinamool Congress, and AIMIM, argued that the bill's provisions undermine federalism and constitutional rights. Calls were made for the bill's withdrawal or referral to a standing committee.

Congress leader KC Venugopal criticized the bill, suggesting it was politically motivated ahead of elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. He urged respect for all religions and warned against divisive politics. MP Gaurav Gogoi highlighted the bill's sensitivity concerning religious matters and emphasized the need for careful consideration by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

Other opposition leaders echoed these sentiments, stressing the potential harm to public sentiments and constitutional rights. The government eventually conceded to referring the bill to a JPC for detailed examination. BJP leaders, however, defended the bill as a measure to ensure transparency and protect the interests of the Muslim community, particularly women and children. They also cited the bill's alignment with recommendations from previous government panels.
