Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, attended a passing out parade at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Golaghat district on Wednesday. The event marked the induction of 940 new constables into the Assam Forest Protection Force, thereby increasing the force's strength by 120%. Sarma commended the recruits, calling it a moment of pride and achievement.

Having undergone rigorous physical and mental training, the new constables are now invaluable assets to the state. Their training, conducted at various locations, culminated in advanced induction at the police academy. Sarma highlighted that the inclusion of these recruits signifies a new milestone for the force.

"With a substantial number of women recruits, these additions are empowered to tackle encroachers and poachers," Sarma said. He pointed out that Assam, with its 26,832 sq km of forest area, which is 34.21% of the state's total geographic area, needs adequate protection. The state boasts seven national parks and 17 wildlife sanctuaries, making the role of the Forest Protection Force crucial. Sarma also underlined that these forces should act as a deterrent against those who harm the forest resources.

Sarma mentioned that in the past three years, all state government recruitments have been conducted transparently, allowing competent students to secure jobs based on merit. He referred to the sentencing of former APSC officials for unfair job practices as an indication of a new era of honesty and transparency in Assam. Sarma announced plans for recruiting an additional 600 Forest Protection Forces by the next February and noted that a new building for the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy would be dedicated in October.

Attendees at the ceremony included Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, MLAs Taranga Gogoi and Bhabendra Nath Bharali, DGP GP Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Home and Political Department A.K. Tiwari, Special Chief Secretary (Forest) M.K. Yadava, along with other dignitaries.
