An eleven-year-old girl from Delhi has made a remarkable recovery after suffering a severe cardiac arrest, following two emergency room visits with intense chest pain. Doctors at a private hospital implemented E-CPR, extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to save her life. The advanced procedure temporarily takes over heart and lung functions, providing vital support in extreme emergencies.

Dr. Mridul Agarwal, a Senior Consultant in Pediatric Cardiology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, explained, 'E-CPR is crucial for providing life-saving support to patients experiencing severe cardiac arrest. It allows the heart and lungs to rest while maintaining blood oxygenation and pressure, giving the body time to recover.' Without this intervention, the young girl may not have survived.

Dr. Raja Joshi, Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Science at the same hospital, highlighted the rapid deterioration of the girl's condition despite initial treatment. The team swiftly initiated ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a procedure acting as an artificial heart and lungs. After seven days of intensive ECMO support, her heart function significantly improved, allowing her to eventually leave the hospital fully recovered. The diagnosis revealed viral myocarditis, a severe heart infection.
