Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old sales executive named Aviraj Kharat in connection with the brutal murder of a 21-year-old woman in Khed taluka, Pune district.

Police reports reveal that the victim, an employee at a private firm in Pimpri Chinchwad, had turned down Kharat's marriage proposal. The incident, which took place on the night of July 28 near her rented residence in Ambethan village, saw Kharat slit the woman's throat and stab her multiple times in the abdomen.

Kharat, who was apprehended within 12 hours by the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch team near Karad on the Pune-Bengaluru highway, was reportedly a classmate of the victim during their engineering diploma course. The victim hailed from Valva Tehsil in Sangli district, and her parents had disapproved of the relationship.

The crime came to light when the victim's roommate reported Kharat attempting to forcibly enter their room around 11 pm. After snatching the victim's phone and persuading her to step outside, Kharat brutally attacked her. The woman's roommate and others found her in a pool of blood after seeing Kharat flee the scene.

The victim was rushed to a nearby private hospital but succumbed to her injuries. A case has been registered under sections 103 (1) for murder and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the BNS.
