Major General Vijay Joshi (Retd.), former Commandant of the Military Command Hospital in Udhampur, recounted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pivotal visit to injured soldiers during the Kargil War of 1999. Back then, Modi was serving as the Bharatiya Janta Party's (BJP) National General Secretary. Joshi emphasized how Modi's presence uplifted the spirits of war-weary soldiers.

On July 26, 2024, as India marks the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Modi visited Drass to pay tribute at the Kargil war memorial. Joshi, reflecting on that time, remarked, "Narendra Modi's visit raised the josh of the soldiers."

Modi's ability to engage with the soldiers, addressing their individual concerns and showing immense patriotism, left a lasting impression, said Joshi. His visit assured the soldiers and hospital staff of the unwavering support from the nation, significantly boosting their morale. "Modi's presence exuded true patriotism," Joshi added.

Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26, commemorates India's successful Operation Vijay. In 1999, Indian forces reclaimed strategic positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistani soldiers and terrorists. The Military Command Hospital in Udhampur, the largest in Northern Command, played a crucial role in caring for the sick and wounded soldiers during the conflict.
