Security arrangements have been heightened across Mumbai as the Muharram procession takes place on Wednesday. Police have increased security to ensure a smooth event, according to Abhinav Deshmukh, Additional Commissioner of South Region, Mumbai. He urged participants to adhere to the police guidelines.
On Tuesday, Mumbai Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory spanning areas including Dharavi and Mahim. The temporary arrangements will be effective from 3 pm on July 17 until midnight. Hyderabad also witnessed a large Muharram procession with substantial participation.
Similarly, in Delhi, elaborate security measures are in place. Achin Garg, Additional DCP of South District, stated that strong security arrangements have been made for the procession routes. Traffic regulations are being enforced with the help of social media updates, as highlighted by Additional CP (Traffic), Dinesh Kumar Gupta.
Delhi's advisory warned of affected routes like Jama Masjid and Mehrauli. Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow has deployed twelve companies of PAC and RAF, said Joint CP (Law and Order) Kirit Rathod. Drones and social media monitoring are also part of the strategy.
In Srinagar, a traditional Muharram procession was observed at Dal Lake. Mumbai's Dongri area saw attendance for a Tazia procession. The All India Shia Personal Law Board had earlier requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for adequate security arrangements for the processions nationwide, to prevent any disruptions by unruly elements.
