Inspired by Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age, the intelligent textbook is designed to emulate the fictional "Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer," a device capable of interactive teaching and personalized learning. Through a combination of advanced natural language processing (NLP) and modular design, this innovation brings course content to life, allowing students to actively engage with their readings in ways that suit their unique learning styles.
The intelligent textbook introduces transformative features that redefine how students engage with academic content. Through dynamic question-answering, students can interact with an AI assistant embedded in their textbooks, asking questions about specific sections and receiving accurate, context-specific responses powered by retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). For complex or convoluted passages, students can highlight text to receive simplified explanations or analogies tailored to their comprehension level, effectively addressing high-cognitive complexity questions.
Additionally, the AI generates personalized quiz questions based on highlighted sections, employing the Leitner system to adaptively focus on areas where students need improvement. Correct answers lead to reduced repetition, while incorrect responses prompt more frequent revisits, creating a focused and adaptive learning experience.
